For more than a decade, Mazda’s three-row SUV has been the CX-9, but that is about to change with the introduction of the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 that is set to replace it and deliver a fantastic new driving experience. If you have been interested in a three-row SUV but are waiting for something exciting and innovative, your patience has paid off. For starters, you can choose from several impressive engine options, including a standard gas engine, with two options for how it is tuned, and a plug-in hybrid, giving you a bold new option for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). No matter what kind of power you want in your three-row SUV, the Mazda CX-90 is ready to deliver.
The standard engine is a 3.3L Turbo I-6 tuned in starting trims to deliver 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, providing excellent power for an SUV of this size. If you are looking for a more exhilarating drive, however, then check out an S trim—there are several S options, including a Turbo S and Turbo S Premium Plus; it has the same engine tuned to deliver 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque to really put you back in your seat. Going with a plug-in hybrid option, like the PHEV Preferred or PHEV Premium Plus model, will get you a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that delivers 323 hp and up to 26 miles of electric range.
Inside the 2024 CX-90, you will find a spacious interior with plenty of room for family and friends, along with everything that you need to bring with you. This is a three-row model with seating for up to eight passengers, though some models feature seats for only six or seven people instead, plus about 75 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside. Standard features in the starting trim include three-zone automatic climate control, push button start, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, and an eight-speaker sound system. Higher trims, like the Turbo S Premium Plus, have leather-trimmed seats, with heated and ventilated first and second-row seating, a 12.3-inch Infotainment display, and a Bose Centerpoint Surround sound system.

When looking at SUVs, it can be easy to focus on things like interior features and functionality and overlook other items like the engine, but this is a mistake. You should expect a powerful engine in any vehicle you consider—it is even more important in a large, three-row SUV like the Mazda CX-90. A weak engine can make your daily drive much less enjoyable, while plenty of power helps ensure you look forward to getting into your vehicle daily. Fortunately, Mazda understands this, and the CX-90 has been equipped with a couple of fantastic engine options that deliver terrific performance.
The standard powertrain that you will find in most Mazda CX-90 models features a 3.3L Turbo I-6 engine that is available in two different versions. The starting Turbo trim, and any trim without “S” in its name, features a version of this engine tuned to deliver 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. However, if you go with one of the S models, the engine has been tuned to provide you with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque for a superior driving experience. To be honest, either version of this engine will give you a fantastic time behind the wheel; both versions of the engine include a mild hybrid system for extra juice, come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and feature i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive.
One of the most exciting things about the CX-90 is that it is available in several PHEV trims, providing a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that delivers 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. This engine gets up to 26 miles of all-electric range from a full charge and gives the CX-90 a total driving range of up to 490 miles on a full tank. With the standard engine, the CX-90 gets an estimated 24 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG of combined fuel economy; but a PHEV model gets an estimated 56 MPGe combined fuel economy. No matter which engine you choose, you get a fantastic driving experience and hundreds of miles between stops for gas.
One of the main reasons so many people choose an SUV is its functional space inside, giving you plenty of ways to tackle any obstacle life throws at you. A three-row model like the Mazda CX-90 is particularly good for this since you have even more room inside to take advantage of, as long as that space is well-designed. Fortunately, Mazda’s designers and engineers understand this and have utilized the space within the CX-90 beautifully to create a fantastic vehicle. Even though this is a three-row model, you will find numerous configurations and layouts based on the trim level you look at, so keep that in mind when considering your options.
The standard Turbo model of the CX-90 has three rows of seating for up to eight passengers: two up front, three in the middle, and three in the third row. Some trims come with two-person seating in the third row, allowing for more individual space but fewer overall passengers. The CX-90 is also available with second-row captain’s chairs rather than a bench seat in the middle; this means some models can have seating for either seven or eight passengers, as well as some models with seating for only six passengers. With so many options to choose from, you can get an interior layout that perfectly meets your needs.
Not only do you have plenty of seating available, but you and your passengers will also be quite comfortable with nearly 40 inches of front headroom and more than 41 inches of front legroom available, along with more than 39 inches of second-row legroom and 30 inches of third-row legroom for your passengers to stretch out in. Depending on the interior configuration you choose, you can get nearly 16 cu.ft. of rear cargo volume in the CX-90, with more than 40 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the second row and more than 75 cu.ft. of cargo volume available behind the front row of seats. This means it is easy to load up with the people and things you need to bring and hit the road.
Since so much of your time will be spent with you inside your vehicle, it is always important to look at what comforts and technology it comes with inside. The Mazda CX-90 is an all-new model, and you would expect it to have the latest features and options, which is exactly what it delivers.
Standard features on the CX-90 include three-zone automatic climate control, power windows and doors, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry with Push-Button Start, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also includes an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar, a four-way front-passenger seat, and leatherette-trimmed seats. You get a 10.25-inch infotainment display, a 7.0-inch LCD meter display as the driver, and an eight-speaker sound system.
There are many trims available with a wide range of options, but the highest trim, the Turbo S Premium Plus, comes with an illuminated entry system, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel. You will find eight-way power driver and front-passenger seats in the Premium Plus, with heated and ventilated front- and second-row seats, including Quilted Nappa leather-trimmed seating. This trim includes a heated steering wheel, along with a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch fully digital LCD meter display for the driver, and a 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround sound system for an incredible overall driving experience. Add in advanced safety technology like Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane-keep Assist, both standard, and you have a fantastic SUV.
