Mazda has built a reputation over the years for building affordable vehicles that feature advanced technology to make driving safe and fun. The 2022 Mazda CX-30 is one of the newer models in the Mazda lineup, having been introduced for the 2020 model year. The CX-30 gives drivers a subcompact SUV with the performance, roominess, and safety you would normally associate with a much larger or more expensive vehicle. This is why it is surprising that the 2022 Mazda CX-30 has a base MSRP of only $22,500, making it affordable for most drivers. [a] In addition, the CX-30 comes in eight different trims, so you can choose the features you desire depending on your personal preferences and budget. This includes a new Carbon Edition with a set of unique red leather seats.

One thing that is sure to make the CX-30 stand out in the growing field of subcompact SUVs is its standard i-ACTIV all-wheel drive with off-road traction assist. This is something new for 2022, as Mazda has decided to give every trim of the CX-30 this feature for the first time. This means that you won't have to pay extra to get the exceptional traction you desire in a subcompact SUV.

  • Performance

    A grey 2022 Mazda CX-30 is shown driving on a tree-lined road.

Mazda offers you two different engines for the 2022 CX-30, depending on which trim level you choose. The base engine is a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. It features variable valve timing with a dual overhead camshaft configuration for its 16 valves and utilizes an advanced direct fuel injection system to deliver 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. The S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, and Premium trims feature this engine.

The other engine comes standard on the Turbo, Turbo Premium, and Turbo Premium Plus trims of the 2022 CX-30. This engine is a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4. It utilizes advanced direct fuel injection and has four valves per cylinder with variable valve timing to improve performance, just like the other engine for the CX-30. However, it adds a turbocharger to increase overall power. As a result, this engine will give you 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque if you fill the tank with 87-octane fuel. However, if you want to get even better performance, you can use 93-octane fuel to deliver 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque.

No matter which engine you choose for your 2022 Mazda CX-30, it will come equipped with a SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission. This is electronically controlled to provide a more immediate response than a purely mechanical transmission. The Premium, Turbo Premium, and Turbo Premium Plus trims include paddle shifters for manual gear changes.

All 2022 Mazda CX-30 models come standard with i-ACTIV all-wheel drive. This is an update for the 2022 model, giving you better traction in inclement weather conditions, no matter which trim you choose. There is also an Off-Road Traction Assist feature that will come in handy if you decide to hit the trail with your CX-30.

    Acceleration and Handling

The Mazda CX-30 has solid acceleration. Models with the base 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine are able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, which is above average for the segment. The models with the turbocharged engine are even faster, able to leap from 0 to 60 mph in breathtaking 5.8 seconds.

This subcompact corners very well, with its responsive steering providing a turning circle of just 37.3 feet. This is due in part to the tight 104.4-inch wheelbase. The front suspension features independent MacPherson struts with a front stabilizer bar, while the rear features a torsion beam axle––a design that maximizes the rear cargo area while giving you a sporty ride. All models of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 ride on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, except for the entry-level S trim, which features 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

    Fuel Economy

With gas prices going up around the country, it is important to find a vehicle that will not cost you too much every time you go to fill up. No matter which engine you choose for your 2022 Mazda CX-30, you are going to get exceptional fuel economy numbers. The CX-30 with the base 2.5-liter I-4 engine provides a very solid 24 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. Choosing the faster 2.5-liter Turbo engine will reduce those numbers only slightly to a still impressive 22 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined.

    Standard Safety Features

Mazda has equipped every model of the 2022 CX-30 with a set of standard driver assistance features that are part of its i-ACTIVSENSE Safety Technology. This has made the CX-30 one of the safest vehicles in its class. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 CX-30 a 5-star rating for overall safety, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick+, considering it one of the safest small SUVs on the road today.

Smart Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection is Mazda's version of a forward collision detection system with emergency brake assist. When the system detects an imminent collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian, it will immediately engage the brakes to help you avoid the collision or mitigate the damage caused by an unavoidable crash.

A major cause of traffic accidents is when drivers drift out of their lane. This can be caused by being distracted or tired. The Mazda CX-30 features a Lane Departure Warning System with Lane Keep Assist that will sound an alarm if you drift out of your lane on the highway. The system will also use automatic steering adjustments to get you back in your lane.

Finally, every 2022 CX-30 has Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go. This is a form of active cruise control. In traditional cruise control systems, you set a desired cruising speed but need to use the brakes to slow down when a slower vehicle gets in front of you. With Mazda Radar Cruise Control, the system will detect slower traffic in front of you and automatically adjust its speed so that you won't collide with the slower-moving vehicle. Once the other vehicle has sped up or moved out of your lane, Mazda Radar Cruise Control will automatically increase its speed until your vehicle reaches the desired speed you set when you engaged the system.

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 features the Mazda Connect Infotainment system on an 8.8-inch center display. This will allow you to get key information on the performance of your CX-30 while also operating all the features of the entertainment system. Most models feature an 8-speaker audio system with Mazda Harmonic Acoustics, except for the Premium, Turbo Premium, and Turbo Premium Plus trims, which come with a Bose 12-speaker premium audio system with Centerpoint 2 and AudioPilot for exceptional audio performance.

You can easily stream your favorite music using Pandora integration and SiriusXM satellite radio. Depending on your phone's operating system, you can access your favorite music from your smartphone using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Hands-free calling is also possible using the Bluetooth connectivity of the Mazda Connect Infotainment system.

  • Interior Space

    Roomy Interior

One complaint that many drivers have when buying a subcompact SUV is that they can feel cramped and lack the proper amount of interior space. While they love the fuel economy and the ease of parking in tight spots, they find they have to give up too much passenger or cargo space. Fortunately, with the 2022 Mazda CX-30, you are going to find that there is plenty of space for up to five passengers and all of your belongings. This ability to get the balance right when it comes to creating and apportioning interior space is something that really sets the CX-30 apart from so many competitors.

This might seem like a major surprise, but you get 20.2 cu.ft. of cargo space in the trunk of your 2022 Mazda CX-30. This will allow you to bring along all of your suitcases if you choose to take your CX-30 on a fun road trip. There is also plenty of room for all of your groceries. If you need additional space, you can easily fold down the rear row of seats to get even more cargo into the back of your CX-30.

    Passenger Space

Passenger space can often be at a premium in a subcompact SUV. Many taller people will find it difficult to sit comfortably with a lack of headroom or legroom, and passengers might find the rear seats too cramped. With many subcompact SUVs, your passengers will be fighting over who gets to ride shotgun. The good news is that this will not be the case in the 2022 Mazda CX-30. There are over 94 cu.ft. of passenger space inside this vehicle.

The engineers at Mazda have done an exceptional job dividing the 94.1 cu.ft. of cabin space between the two rows of the CX-30. This is shown by the fact that there are 38.1 inches of headroom in the front row and 38.3 inches in the back. This also goes for legroom, with front row passengers enjoying 41.7 inches, while those in the rear seats won't be complaining about 36.3 inches––more than enough room for all three of them to stretch out. Even the width of the CX-30 is more than adequate, as shown by the 53.6 inches of shoulder room and 53.2 inches of hip room in the rear seats.
