How Much is a Transmission?

Transmission repair can be an intimidating undertaking, and when it seems inevitable, you’re likely left wondering, “how much is a transmission?” Transmission cost for your specific car depends on which new Mazda model you drive, but typically, a transmission cost typically ranges from $1,800 to $3,400. However, this base transmission cost does not include labor, taxes, fees, or other ancillary repairs.

However, your transmission is essential to your Blythewood drives, and our service team will help you better understand, “how much is a transmission?”

What Does the Transmission Do?

Your transmission transfers the kinetic energy produced by your engine into usable energy. When you shift gears, the engine and transmission will disconnect and adjust to a new drive. Each gear meters out power much like the gears on your bike. Lower gears allow quicker acceleration while higher gears allow higher speeds.

With an automatic transmission, a torque converter is typically used to engage gear changes, while manual transmissions require direct input of a clutch to allow gear changes.

How Often Should the Transmission Fluid Be Replaced?

While the specific number of miles can be found in your owner’s manual, some Mazda technicians recommend every 30,000 miles, and others will say to wait until about 100,000 miles. If you have any questions, you can consult our service experts by giving us a call at 803-404-5100.

How To Check Your Transmission Fluid

It’s essential to make sure you’re catching any potential transmission damage before it becomes a serious issue. This can be done by regularly checking your vehicle’s transmission fluid. Here are the steps below:

  1. Turn the car on to warm up the engine.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. Use your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble finding it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and put some of the fluid on your finger. Move it around between your forefinger and thumb. This liquid should be mostly clear with a pink hue.
  4. Make sure the fluid doesn’t give off a burnt smell or look dirty. If this is the case, bring your model in for a replacement.
  5. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag and put it back in place.
  6. Pull it out again to check the levels. Add more if it’s under the “Full” marking.
  7. Using a funnel, add more fluid until it reaches the “Full” marking.
